چکیده

Measuring flight characteristics of micro-UAVs is challenging because of their small size and low weight. These constraints prevent the use of conventional onboard measurement systems. The objective of this research was to capture the state information of a radio controlled (RC) airplane using an off-board motion tracking system and to use this state information to study the performance of the airplane. The airplane used has a 37.5-cm (14.75-in) wingspan, weighs 11.5-g (0.41oz), and has throttle, elevator and rudder control. Using the motion track, a time history of the position and attitude was recorded. This paper presents methods that were developed and implemented to calculate aerodynamic properties from the position and attitude tracking data. The lift and drag were estimated using data from uncontrolled glides and compared to predictions from thin airfoil theory. The state information was captured over multiple flight tests in order to study the airplane performance across various flight regimes.

Control of Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles

Most birds and many insects use periodic wing motion to propel themselves and maneuver. Most conventional flying machines are propelled by rotating machinery, achieve lift through rotating or fixed wings, and are controlled through the production of steady aerodynamic forces produced by rotors or movable wings. Many of the first powered flapping-wing micro air vehicles (MAVs) effectively replac...

Gust Mitigation of Micro Air Vehicles Using Passive Articulated Wings

Birds and insects naturally use passive flexing of their wings to augment their stability in uncertain aerodynamic environments. In a similar manner, micro air vehicle designers have been investigating using wing articulation to take advantage of this phenomenon. The result is a class of articulated micro air vehicles where artificial passive joints are designed into the lifting surfaces. In or...

Three-Dimensional Simulation of Airflow and Nano-Particle Beam Focusing in Aerodynamic Lenses(RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper airflow, nano-and micro-particle motions in an aerodynamic particle beam focusing system consisting of several lenses, a nozzle and the downstream chamber, was studied. A three-dimensional numerical simulation for the system was presented and the compressible airflow and thermal conditions in the aerodynamic lens system were evaluated. Dilute particle concentration was assumed so ...

Tracking and Shape Control of a Micro-cantilever using Electrostatic Actuation

In this paper the problems of state estimation, tracking control and shape control in a micro-cantilever beam with nonlinear electrostatic actuation are investigated. The system’s partial differential equation of motion is converted into a set of ordinary differential equations by projection method. Observabillity of the system is proven and a state estimation system is designed using extended ...
